EPB&B walks Portland to Coast for cancer awareness

Proving to be a great team not only in the Portland Insurance business, but on the road raising money for cancer awareness as well. Seven EPB&B team members, headed out to tackle the 128-mile 2024 Portland To Coast relay last weekend, otherwise known as the most popular and largest walking relay race in the world, annually drawing participants from over 40 countries and all 50 states.

This is the third year EPB&B has had a team enter the relay in support of cancer awareness, thanks to the organizational efforts of Personal Lines Account Manager, Donna Jones.

“Everyone we work with has either batled cancer or been touched by a loved who has had the disease and this walk reminds us of those who have had to go through this journey,” Donna says when asked why she continues organizing an EPB&B team for the relay. “EPB&B is about family and I am so proud to work for a company that supports this cause. I thank EPB&B and the Baker family for supporting this fight and my co worker family for sharing this weekend once a year to walk our hearts out for this great cause.”

Walking was not required to join the fun, as several employees and friends served as volunteers on the course, providing support, guidance, and cheering on the team.

“Nothing beats getting to know people on a deeper level than when crammed into a vehicle for 24+ hours,” added Commercial Lines Account Manager, Tina Dehut. “As a team we had the opportunity to practice a new level of patience at when frustration levels were high.  When you combine a lack of sleep, adrenaline, and cramped quarters, you really get to know who people are and how they handle themselves when out of their comfort zone.”

EPB&B President was there step by step (and supplying the team with much needed caffeine treats),” I am grateful to experience a rural part of Oregon while learning more about my team away from the office.”

Following the race the team celebrated at a Seaside beach house for rest, tacos and team bonding.

Congratulations to team EPB&B for a race well walked.

How To Avoid moving company scams

Relocating to a new home is an exciting yet stressful time. Among the myriad of tasks to handle, choosing a reliable moving company is critical. Depending on your homeowners policy, your homeowners insurance may or may not cover damage or losses experienced during a move in Oregon. Prior to your move contact the team at Elliott, Powell, Baden and Baker to review your homeowners insurance policy. To ensure your move goes smoothly and safely, here’s a guide on how to choose a reputable company to ensure the safety of your personal belongings.

1. Research Extensively

  • Start Early: Begin your search for a moving company well in advance. Rushing the process can lead to hasty decisions, which may increase the risk of falling into a scam.
  • Check Credentials: Ensure the moving company is licensed and insured. In the U.S., interstate movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and have a U.S. DOT number.
  • Read Reviews: Review online reviews and testimonials on multiple platforms, such as Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Pay attention to any recurring complaints or red flags.

2. Get Multiple Estimates

  • Obtain In-Person Estimates: Reputable companies typically offer to conduct an in-person or virtual survey of your belongings to provide an accurate estimate. Be wary of companies that provide quotes without seeing your possessions.
  • Compare Quotes: Gather at least three estimates from different movers. Be cautious of significantly low quotes, as they can be a sign of a bait-and-switch scam, where the company lures you in with a low price and then raises it after your belongings are loaded.

3. Watch Out for Red Flags

  • Large Upfront Deposits: A common scam involves asking for a large deposit before the move. Reputable companies typically ask for a small deposit or no deposit at all. Avoid paying more than 20% of the estimated cost upfront.
  • Lack of Written Contract: Always insist on a written contract that outlines all the terms and conditions, including services provided, fees, pickup and delivery dates, and the company’s responsibility for lost or damaged items.
  • No Company Address or Unmarked Trucks: If the moving company doesn’t have a physical address or if they show up in unmarked trucks, it’s a major red flag. Reputable movers will have branded vehicles and a legitimate business location.

4. Understand Your Rights and Responsibilities

  • Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with the “Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet provided by FMCSA, which outlines the regulations and your rights during a move.
  • Valuation Coverage: Your Homeowners insurance may or mayn’t cover damages done to your items in a move so it is important to understand the different liability coverage levels the moving company offers. Full Value Protection provides comprehensive coverage, while Released Value Protection is less expensive but only covers a fraction of the value of your items.

5. Protect Yourself During the Move

  • Create an Inventory: Before the movers arrive, make a detailed inventory of your belongings. Take photos or videos of valuable items as additional documentation.
  • Supervise the Move: Be present during the move to oversee the handling of your possessions. Have a friend or family member assist you to ensure nothing is overlooked.

6. Stay Vigilant After the Move

  • Inspect Your Belongings: Upon delivery, inspect your items for damage or loss. Note any issues on the mover’s copy of the inventory list before signing off.
  • Report Problems Promptly: If you encounter problems, such as missing items or damage, immediately file a claim with the moving company. In case of serious issues, you may need to file a complaint with the FMCSA or your state’s consumer protection office.

7. Trust Your Instincts

  • Listen to Your Gut: If you feel something is off about a moving company, trust your instincts and walk away. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Scams in the moving industry can cause significant financial and emotional stress. By doing thorough research, recognizing red flags, and staying vigilant throughout the process, you can protect yourself from falling victim to these scams. Remember, a successful move begins with choosing the right moving company—one that is reputable, transparent, and reliable. Happy moving!

Despite your best efforts accidents may happen during a move so make sure your belongings are protected. Contact Personal Lines team at Elliott, Powell, Baden and Baker and we will help find he right insurance coverage for your next big move.

Renters insurance for college students

College is an exciting time filled with new experiences, learning opportunities, and independence. But with this newfound freedom comes responsibility—especially when it comes to protecting your belongings. Many students move away from home and into dorms or off-campus apartments, bringing with them a variety of personal items, from laptops and smartphones to furniture and clothing. But what happens if these items are stolen, damaged, or lost? This is where renters insurance comes into play.

Here’s why college students should invest in renters insurance:

1. Protection Against Theft

College campuses and student housing are often prime targets for theft. Whether you’re living in a dorm or an off-campus apartment, your belongings are at risk. Renters insurance provides coverage for your personal property if it’s stolen. This means that if your laptop is taken from your room or your bike is stolen from outside your apartment, renters insurance can help cover the cost of replacing these items.

2. Coverage for Damaged Belongings

Accidents happen, and when they do, they can be costly. Imagine coming back to your apartment to find that a pipe has burst, flooding your room and ruining your electronics, textbooks, and furniture. Without renters insurance, you’d be left to replace these items out of pocket. Renters insurance covers damage caused by various incidents, such as fire, water damage (excluding floods), and vandalism, helping you avoid financial strain.

3. Liability Protection

Renters insurance doesn’t just cover your belongings; it also provides liability protection. This means that if someone is injured while visiting your dorm or apartment, or if you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property (e.g., you accidentally start a fire that damages the apartment), your renters insurance policy can help cover the medical expenses, legal fees, or repair costs. Liability coverage is especially important for students who may host gatherings or have roommates.

4. Affordable Peace of Mind

One of the biggest misconceptions about renters insurance is that it’s expensive. In reality, renters insurance is quite affordable, especially for the level of coverage it provides, making it a small investment for substantial peace of mind. Considering the high cost of replacing items like electronics, textbooks, and clothing, renters insurance is a cost-effective way to protect your assets.

5. Parental Homeowners Insurance May Not Cover You

Some college students mistakenly believe that their parents’ homeowners insurance will cover their belongings while they’re away at school. While some policies may provide limited coverage, it’s often not enough to fully protect a student’s possessions, especially if they’re living off-campus. Renters insurance ensures that your belongings are adequately covered without relying on your parents’ policy.

College life is full of surprises, but unexpected losses shouldn’t be one of them. Renters insurance is an essential tool for college students, providing protection against theft, damage, and liability at an affordable cost.

Protect your peace of mind and your belongings—contact the team at EPB&B before you head off to college and we will help you find an affordable and comprehensive renters insurance policy, so you can focus on your studies and enjoy your college experience without worrying about what might happen if the unexpected occurs.
